We brought Volta Trucks’ vision of a zero emission, fully electric mid-sized truck to life as fast as possible. Exploiting the electric powertrain, the payload is optimised and a safer truck for urban roads created. We built the first working prototype for the global launch and initial customer drives.
THE CHALLENGE
Volta Trucks had the vision to create an EV truck but lacked the engineering and production expertise to convert it into reality. Firstly, Volta needed to investigate the technical feasibility, likely cost and development time. Secondly, they would need to produce a single concept demonstrator of high quality to persuade customers and investors.
WHAT WE DID
A functional analysis helped Volta compare concepts with the current market and created a critical pathway for prototype development and construction. As lead technical partner, we managed the styling house and key technology suppliers for the program. After producing a full CAD design, we identified and engaged a supply chain. We manufactured and assembled the prototype, then provided technical support for filming and photography, the global launch event, as well onward customer demonstrations.
THE RESULTS
A working prototype was delivered on time 10 months after the first meeting, under budget during COVID-19 restrictions. Securing subsequent funding rounds, 4 months after launch Volta’s order book stood at $260 million.
With a successful record of producing demonstrator and fleet trial vehicles, coupled with many years’ experience working with EV powertrains, we felt Prodrive was a natural partner; big enough to assemble a multi-skilled team quickly, yet small enough to retain the agility needed when introducing new technology.
