BMW M3 P/90/36
VEHICLE PROVENANCE
Following its debut in 1987 drivers of the Prodrive-built BMW M3 regularly tasted success claiming multiple podiums and outright victories. The car’s greatest moment came when Patrick Snijers claimed overall victory at the 1988 Manx Rally in BMW M3 P/90/36.
After its time with Prodrive, BMW M3 chassis P/90/36 was sold to a Russian team and stayed in Russia until it returned to its birthplace in November 2010.
RESTORATION BEGINS
When the car arrived in Banbury some twenty years later a team of Prodrive engineers set about restoring the car and returning it to its former glory.
After a fully controlled strip down, whilst detailing the various work required, the body shell was taken away for a plastic shot bead blast to take it back to the bare metal. The shell was repaired before being primed and painted to an exceptional standard in its original BMW colour. Finally, a sealing wax was applied to maximise the lifespan.
ENGINE REBUILD
Once the engine was removed, it was also stripped down for a complete overhaul. All components were deep cleaned and inspected, rebuilt or replaced before the engine and gearbox were tested on Prodrive’s in-house dyno.
CAR ASSEMBLY
With the engine rebuilt and BMW’s body work restored Prodrive engineers started the process of reassembling the iconic M3. No expense was spared with, amongst others, new lights, calipers and brake discs installed.
Following the completion of the restoration project the BMW was given a full shakedown prior to being signed off by a Prodrive Test Driver.
RETURN TO COMPETITION
Restored to its original condition, with left-hand drive tarmac specification, fire extinguishers, seats and harnesses that complied with safety regulations it allowed the car to either run in classic rallies or simply be kept as a piece of Prodrive history.
In this case the fully restored BMW M3 returned to rallying at the Rallye du Conroz-Huy piloted by driver Didier Van Wijnsberghe and co-driver Wim Soenens
